Out & About
Cutler Botanic Gardens offers ‘Out and About’ twice yearly. ‘Out and
About’ is a free educational program for elementary (K - 6) school children.
This program, based on New York State Curriculum Standards, is available
on Thursdays both spring and fall.
The field trip to Cutler Botanic Gardens, right here in Binghamton,
includes enjoyable hands-on experiences, encompassing math, science, social
studies, art and English language arts and lasts about 2 hours.
The ‘Out & About’ Spring Program is designed for grades K – 3 and is
entitled ‘The Cycle of Life’ and focuses on plant life cycles. The field
trip consists of:
- History: Life on an 1800’s farm
- Science: The germination process and the process of decomposition
(compost)
- Math: Math exercise based on planting seeds in a garden
- English/Arts: Play about seasons and life cycles.
The ‘Out & About’ Fall Program is designed for grades 4 – 6 and is entitled
‘The Three Sisters, Life as an Iroquois Child’. The field trip consists
of:
- History: Life as an Iroquois Child
- Science: Seeds and Fruit
- Math: Math exercise based on planting seeds in a garden
- English/Language Arts: Native Dance and song
Though the program is most effective if presented outdoors, the ‘Out
& About’ Program can be presented indoors in the advent of inclement weather.
Pre-trip and follow-up exercises are be provided upon registration for ‘Out
and About.’
